KSPACe >

The Kansas State Publications Archival Collection (KSPACe) is a joint project of the Kansas State Historical Society (KSHS) and the Kansas State Library to address the long-term preservation and access requirements of electronic government publications and documents. The initial phase - a pilot project that will address a select group of reports required to be submitted to the Legislature in Chapter 151 of the 2002 Session Lawswill be available at the start of the 2005 Legislative Session. Staff from key state agencies listed in Chapter 151, from the Legislature, and DISC participated in the planning for the initial phase. Funding for the pilot project was provided by a grant from the Information Network of Kansas Board of Directors.

If the pilot project is successful, KSPACe will become an enterprise-wide electronic repository for state government publications to ensure their preservation and accessibility over time. Legislators, the public, and state agency staff will be able to find, view, and download reports in KSPACe via the World Wide Web at www.kspace.org.

Projected Benefits

  • Legislatively mandated reports will be available to legislators at any computer with Internet access.
  • E-mail notification can be used to inform legislators of the availability of each new report.
  • Agencies will reduce printing and distribution costs.
  • Enterprise-wide implementation will have relatively low start up costs.
  • Archival preservation will be addressed more readily by storing reports in a centralized repository that supports the most widely used formats.
  • The public will have access to state government publications in a single location and searching for reports that have no restrictions will be enhanced by a cooperative cataloging effort among government document librarians in the state.
